International Data Group (IDG) and VoiceIndigo announced a partnership for delivering breaking news alerts to mobile phones. Mobile alerts about technology related news will be sent by VoiceIndigo. This news will come from IGN brands, including CIO, Computerworld, InfoWorld and Network World to mobile phones. To have this new service, users must subscribe to one of the following websites: CIO, Computerworld, InfoWorld or Network World. After subscribing, users will receive alerts via SMS whenever breaking news occurs. This alert includes the news headline, along with embedded links that direct the user to a WAP page where he can read or listen to the entire story. The news are divided in five different categories: technology business news, security & compliance, servers & data center management, storage & business continuity, mobility & unified communications. It is sure that only breaking news are delivered, because the alerts sent to mobile phones are created by IDG. “As a global technology media company, we see many trends, such as mobile media consumption in Europe, Middle East, and the Asia Pacific markets. We’ve applied what we’ve learned there to new ways of engaging the US audience,” said Paul Calento, senior vice president, strategic development at InfoWorld. “InfoWorld was already working with VoiceIndigo on mobile podcasts. For the IDG Mobile Alert initiative, the combination of VoiceIndigo’s vision, innovative mobile content technology platform and unique multi-media support helped create another first that IDG’s competition just can’t match. We’ve been able to introduce a unique mobile content program across four IDG media brands, and move from concept to production within a matter of weeks. The mobile ad platform is sold out until the fall.” If the user wants to use this news service, its mobile phone and carrier need to support links within SMS, so that he can click on them to access the article via WAP. Phones that include this service are: LG, Motorola RAZR, Motorola V-Series, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Palm Treo 600, 650, 700W.
